Arsenal Ladies F.C. – History

The ladies won their first major trophy in 1992 – Women’s League Cup – and later that year the Ladies won promotion to the FA Women’s Premier League. The Ladies surprised everyone, because they won the League in that same year.
The Ladies’ most successful season was the 2006/2007 season, where they won the UEFA Women’s Cup –as the first British club, the FA Women’s Premier League, the FA Women’s Cup and the FA’s Women’s Premier League Cup. On top of that then Ladies won the Women’s Community Shield and the London County FA Women’s Cup. In the Premier League, the Ladies won all 22 games (scoring 119 goals, conceding 10). The team received The Committee Award at the Sports Journalists’ Awards in 2007, in honour of their achievements. The Ladies earned a unique sextuple in a year where they played against mostly full-time professional players, whereas most of the Ladies team had a full-time or part-time job on the side.
The 2007/2008 season wasn’t as successful as the 2006/2007 season, but the Ladies continued to write history. They were knocked out of the UEFA Women’s Cup in the quarter-finals and lost the Premier League Cup final, however, they won the league for the fifth time in a row and they won the FA Women’s Super Cup.
Unfortunately the next season, 2008/2009, meant the end of a record five year unbeaten run in the Premier League. Despite that one defeat, the Ladies won the League and the two major cups that season.
In 2009 the Ladies were named as founding members of the FA Women’s Super League. They won the first season of the FA WSL. In 2011 the Ladies completed another domestic treble –WSL Champions, FA Cup, Continental Cup. In 2012 the Ladies won the FA Women’s Super League and the Continental Cup.
In 2013, the Ladies finished third in the FA WSL, after becoming League Champions for nine years in a row. Despite that, the Ladies won the Women’s Cup and the Continental Cup in 2013.

Arsenal Ladies F.C. were formed in 1987 by Vic Akers, who remained manager of the Ladies for 22 years. In 2009 Akers retired as club manager and became a general manager of the Ladies. Tony Gervaise took over from Akers in 2009. After just 20 games in charge, Gervaise quit, he hinted at interference in team affairs was the main reason behind his decision. Assistant academy director Laura Harvey took over from Gervaise in 2010.
Vic Akers managed the Ladies to winning the FA Women’s Cup 10x, The FA Women’s Premier League Cup 10x, the FA Women’s Premier League 11x and the UEFA Women’s Cup. This also meant five League and FA Women’s Cup Doubles, and four domestic trebles.
The Ladies went 108 games without defeat -16 October 2003/29 March 2009. Between November 2005 and April 2008 the ladies won 51 league games in a row.

The ladies have full support of Arsenal F.C., former vice-chairman David Dein used to be club President of Arsenal Ladies F.C.. When he left in 2007 Keith Edelman –Arsenal’s managing director- took over. Edelman left the club in 2008 and Ivan Gazidis –chief executive of Arsenal F.C.- is currently Chairman of the Arsenal Ladies.
The support by Arsenal F.C. for the Arsenal Ladies is well-known. Arsenal employed several players and staff members to develop and co-ordinate the teams and the club’s Academy. Both clubs share the Emirates and Nike sponsorship and the Ladies have been entitled to play at the Emirates –previously Highbury.

Diary of a Gooner: The Gunners will field a strong team against Chelsea.

EXCLUSIVE: The Gunners will field a strong team against Chelsea in the COC.

In the past few years, Arsène has gone with a team that is inexperienced but talented in the League cup. However this year, the league cup has to be taken seriously in order for Arsenal to break their silverware drought. The principle is the same, rotation will be made, but not as much as expected. Arsenal will be playing Chelsea, mind. This isn’t West Brom or Coventry. Chelsea have huge quality in depth which makes them a step ahead of tomorrow’s game. However Arsène has decided to field a strong team, but leave out the likes of Giroud and Özil due to fatigue and injuries. There may be some youngsters playing such as Gnabry and Ryo, however, they are ready for the first team, so it shouldn’t be a big problem.

Now, do Arsenal have enough quality to beat Chelsea?
With the probable team that will be starting I don’t see why we shouldn’t beat them with flying colours. The atmosphere will be vibrant and the crowd will get behind their team. Arsenal need to win, Arsenal is a momentum club and I’m sure they can get through to the next round.

Probable line up : Fabianski, Monreal, Vermaelen(C), Mertesacker, Jenkinson, Wilshere, Ramsey, Rosicky, Ryo, Bendtner, Gnabry

Probable Bench: Viviano, Akpom, Cazorla, Gibbs, Eisfeld, Hayden, Zelalem.

They claim to be “In The Know”, but are they? – Part III – Results

After a lot of research, saving images, talking to ITKs, talking to you, writing about it, asking you to get involved, creating polls and most importantly getting blocked by several ITKs -my heart’s broken- I think it’s about time I show you guys who won/lost the 6 polls I created.

Let’s start with the three polls that were only open for 6 hours:

Who do/did you follow:

Who do you still believe:

Who is the best:

Now for the other three:

Who was the most frustrating:

OtherFrustrating

Who was the most disappointing:

OtherDisappointing

Who’s the worst:

OtherWorst

Do you agree/disagree with the outcome?

Also, a massive thank you to the one who chose me as the worst, most disappointing and most frustrating ITK, I didn’t even know I was ITK, so thank you!

They claim to be “In The Know”, but are they? – Part II – Followers

Thank you so much for all the positive feedback regarding Part I, this goes for both the ITKs as for people like me. I was amazed by how positive most of your reactions were, I expected that some of you were going to be furious.

Anyway, in Part I you could read why I started this and what the some of the ITKs tweeted. In this part I’ll be talking about their followers.

Let’s first take a look at how many followers each of the ITKs have on twitter:

For those of you who do not have any experience with twitter, IndyKaila’s got the most followers and ShereWillPower the least.

The most powerful Arsenal ITK is Geoff and I don’t think there are many Arsenal fans on twitter who don’t know who Geoff is. Despite half of the Arsenal fans hating (on) him constantly, Geoff manages to (usually) stay polite even when he receives abuse.

Your reactions

Here’s a selection of the tweets I received:

Though most of you were willing to send screencaptures of the tweets, hardly anyone wanted credit for them, which I believe is rather odd, are you afraid either one of them is going to bite your head off?

I did receive a few reactions and there were basically three types of reactions.

1. Hate
2. Annoyance (e.g. Getting your hopes up, everyone suddenly believes every single rumour)
3. People shouldn’t take it too seriously and just laugh.

Alex: “ITKs annoy me, more than you’ll ever know. They also entertain me though.”
Rebecca: “I don’t understand why, most of these accounts are hosted by adults, do they not have a job?!”
Adam: “I don’t follow ITKs, I don’t want to follow any ITKs either, but you can’t escape their rumours, not if you’re on twitter.”
Terese: “I find it funny how they can lie to us, get our hopes up and eventually get upset because we aren’t happy and no longer trust them.”
John: “They should just shut the f*ck up, bunch of c*nts!”

What made me laugh is how you all attacked every single one of them, including Geoff on twitter. Screaming you have screencaptures of his deleted tweets and when I asked you about them I received about 600+ screencapture of Indy, Ben, Dan etc. and those who did email me screencaptures of Geoff either asked to stay anonymous, or it was the 42 million German tweet. Yet as soon as he turns his back a lot of you attack him, but you seem to be too scared to actually mention him.

How did the ITKs react?

Geoff has been rather supportive of this blog post and shared it with his followers, despite knowing there are a lot of ‘haters’ following him.

We tried to get in touch with Indy, he hasn’t responded yet.

DialSquare_1886, OpinionDan and BFairthorne have all been in touch and gave me their opinion.

He posted a comment to Part I:

Ahh you fail to mention that i said Gervinho to move to Roma, that Reina indeed moved to Napoli when others said Cesar, I also went against the others by saying we were not going for Bernado, Gustavo and that Bender was wanted but wages were an issue. Oh and I mentioned that Per would be captain, even if by default, that one remains to be seen. I also mentioned Dein coming back and in light of new speculation that Gazidis could be pushed out next summer or sooner I wonder who his replacement will be?!

What 140 characters will never explain is reasons and what alot of people don’t get is how or why transfers come off or don’t. The info I get comes from the top, not some boy in the box office or press office, but those who make the financial decisions for Arsenal. I cannot reveal who it is, but what people have to realise is this.
When a player’s name is given to the board, when the negotiations start between clubs, agents and players, many things can happen for and against.
For example, two players. Higuain was agreed. Napoli gazumped us and Wenger refused to up the money for the player, another example was Rooney. At the end of last season he was extremely unhappy and his agent started talks with as many clubs as to who were interested. We asked for a medical, which was laughed about at the time, but players have medicals all the time, out of the transfer windows so agents, clubs and the likes can check on a player’s fitness. The thing with Rooney is he became injured and returned early from tour and then Moyes had a sit down with him and they have agreed to see how it goes certainly until January. Since they sat down Rooney got injured again, this time more serious.

To clarify, Giles is a made up name of the person I speak to, he is real, he is at Arsenal and what he gives is upto date info, but that alwys seemed to changed, sometimes hourly.

I actually said Cesc was NOT coming back, his agent ( Darren Dein ) lives not far from me and the speculation of him returning to England was all because his girlfriend got Cesc to buy her ex marital home in Knightsbridge which fuelled paper talk.

Cesar failed due to players wages, we were very close to the deal and everything was agreed in principle, but Wenger changed his mind once the wage demands went over what was agreed originally.

Suarez was NEVER about staying in the Premier League, he wants to go to Spain. His agent, Pep’s brother had given Arsenal wrong information about his contract, infact it was a subliminal message to clubs in Spain to let them know how much they would need to bid for his services. Suarez doesn’t want to stay in England so why would he talk to Arsenal. Yet again our naive Gazidis was led up the wrong garden path.

The Bale deal was indeed the trigger for alot of transfers, Madrid do not have the deep pockets they once had, and had to sell in order to finance the Bale deal, hence why we got Ozil. Again I claimed we were not in for Di Maria and Benzema didn’t want to leave Madrid.

Finally, i think you will find, I gave the Ozil as done on the morning it happened and said he would wear the no.11. well before anyone reported it as done late that afternoon. not that I wanting bragging rights or anything ;)

The situation Arsenal now face unlike our rivals down the road, is they never secured the replacements for players they let go. Look at all the players who have been shipped out, rightly or wrongly, and all we got was one world class player. Our squad needs to be improved and the board will see to this in Jan.

The other problem is Gazidis, telling everyone who wants to listen we can afford big transfers and big wages and we are bringing in world class players does not help anyone when sitting down at the negotiating table.

I think if you want to do a full dossier on those you claim to be ITK, atleast give them the right to reply.

Kind regards
Dan

They claim to be “In The Know”, but are they? – Part I – Tweets

We’ve all seen them, even if we didn’t care it was impossible to avoid them… ITKs. People who claim to have inside sources at a football club, people who claim to be BFF with football agents and/or claim to be related to football players. They get our hopes up and disappoint us.

I decided to save screencaptures of their tweets, just to see who was right/wrong at the end of the transfer window.

Here’s Part I – What did they tweet?

IndyKaila

I think every single one of us knows he’s a fraud by now. For those who aren’t quite convinced, here are just a few of Indy’s tweets:

I don’t even know where to start… Let’s move on.

WayneGooney18/ABrokeDiaby

For those who’ve been following this blog for a while, you know that Ree wrote a post about WayneGooney18, also known as ‘abrokediaby’. In case you are not familiar with either one of these accounts -we all envy you- here are  a few tweets:

So boys, where is Cesc? Or Higuaín/Rooney/Fellaini/Cesar?

In case you want to contact either WayneGooney18 or abrokediaby, both accounts are either deleted or suspended. I guess we’ll never know why Cesc didn’t join and why we never signed a striker…

OpinionDan

Some believe him, some don’t. Here’s a few of Dan’s tweets:

Couple of things, it’s Higuaín* and you were right. The deal’s done, unfortunately not with Arsenal.
Both Rooney and Fellaini are playing for Manchester United this season.
Arsène Wenger confirmed we were actually in for Suárez*.
Unless Cesar changed his name to Viviano, I’m pretty sure that deal wasn’t done.

Agent Jim

Apparently Agent Jim is a young lad living in Tottenham, supporting Spurs and Ipswich and he’s not “ITK”, mind you I got this information from another ‘ITK’ so I’m not quite sure if this is true.

Anyway, Agent Jim didn’t have that much new information. Take a look at his tweets:

If the ‘kid’ placed a bet on you not knowing what on earth you’re talking about, I think he won. Well done kiddo!

…at least he knows how to spell the names…
Oh wait, Higuaín*.

Ben Fairthorne

We all know this guy, right? If you don’t, you’re probably not on twitter. If you are and you somehow managed to avoid this guy, you deserve an award. Well done, take a bow!

Check out some of his tweets:

Le sigh.
Keep up the good work Ben, you’re doing great!

HighburyStand

For your information, this guy claims to have Pat Rice in his list of contacts on his phone. Just so you know, here’s what his sources told him:

Three things. 1. Who’s Gamez? 2. I think Gustavo really did prefer Wolfsburg 3. What happened to Suárez?

Nice try though,

Is someone trying to be better than Geoff?

GeoffArsenal

Now that I’ve mentioned him anyway, let’s look at some of his tweets. Some people hate him, others love him. Some people believe he always has everything right, others believe he’s just talking. Here’s a few tweets from Geoff:

Say whatever you want about Geoff, he’s always politically correct in his responses.

Others

There were more accounts claiming to have inside information. Here are a few tweets:

Conclusion

I think it’s safe to say 99% do not have a clue what on earth they’re on about. Those who may have a guy on the inside make mistakes as well. Truth of the matter is, no deal is done until either the player, the club or the player’s former club confirmed it. Yes, speculation is fun and it keeps us all entertained, but is it really worth it? Do these guys really deserves this much attention? The worst part is we can’t seem to help ourselves, we want to believe their rumours so bad. I personally find most of the ITKs annoying as f*ck, yet after speaking to some of them, they were actually quite nice. Most of them think they actually have the power to change Arsenal’s plans, others genuinely believe this is the way to help fellow fans and to keep them updated and a few actually believe they know what’s going on, when they don’t.

It’s up to you if you still believe ITKs, or people who claim to be ITK. Please consider your heart and your feelings before making your decision and please realise that abuse is not the way to go. It doesn’t matter who it is, what they claim to be or why they do it, they are people and they don’t deserve to receive threats (and those who do, only deserve it because they’re challenging you and they want your attention, if you really hate them that much, don’t give them the attention).

Tonight will be Part II of the ITK saga, which will include your views on the matter
(you can still send an email with your views to ohtobeagoonerette@gmail.com)

More pictures will be added to the galleries throughout the weekend.

Thank you so much for all the RTs and Shares. Keep it up!
Thank you to everyone who’s sent me emails with screencaps, I am still trying to get through all of them -which is why more pictures will be added throughout the weekend- I received 1042 emails from you guys so far and hopefully even more after you read this post.

Don’t forget to vote on the polls!
Results will be posted in Part III (this Sunday) in which we’ll reveal who’s helped out with the screencaptures!

OhToBeAGooner(ette): Info on ITK Post and ITK Polls.

Heya!

I promised to upload some extra information regarding the post I’m working on…

The post is about ITKs, people who claim to be “In The Know”.

Over the last few weeks/months I’ve been keeping track of Arsenal rumours and those screaming them the loudest on everyone’s favourite social media website, Twitter. I carefully wrote down names, tweets, more names, prices and made a lot of screencaptures to use later on.

I personally think that someone should’ve done this earlier, because these people are annoying and ruin the transfer window for me.

What can you do to help?

1. If you have any screencaptures of an ITK tweeting about an Arsenal signing being “done”, “transfer fee has been agreed”, “completed his medical”, “will be revealed soon” etc. let me know!

2. If you know someone who has tweeted a lot of screencaps that meet 1.’s requirements, let me know!

3. If you want to have your say on ITKs or one ITK, let me know!

4. Share this post wherever you can, let’s make it a group effort.

How do you let me know?
Twitter: @EvaMcL3
Email: ohtobeagoonerette@gmail.com

I will give credit to everyone who helped out. However, I will ask you if you want me to post your name, if you want to stay anonymous, that’s okay too.

Thank you so much for reading this in the first place, and a special thank you to everyone who’s already worked hard to help out.

One more thing. Could you answer these three polls?

Love, Eva

GoonerGolazo: Diary of a Gooner – Arsenal bid spectacularly low again!

Arsenal have reportedly made an offer for Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita after negotiations took place throughout the week. Vicente Guaita was targeted by Arsenal after it was seen that the player was keen to leave Valencia should he not be able to hold down a commanding position over challenging goalkeeper Diego Alves.

In a World Cup year players are always keen to leave if they aren’t getting regular game time, and with the mix up going on at Valencia, in deciding who their main goalkeeper is, I’m sure Guaita wants more assurances. So, in swooped Arsenal with an opening offer according to Spanish reports and a bid of £4 million was made. A fair price for a goalkeeper as rarely do you see big money moves in football for the goalkeeping position, however the bid is still a tad low in my opinion.

The bid did in fact turn out to be more than a tad low, it was ridiculously low after Valencia supposedly wanted a massive £25 million for the keeper! Now on first thought you may be thinking either, Vicente Guaita is a very good goalkeeper, or that he has a massively inflated price tag. To be honest it’s a bit of both! You can never expect to get that sort of money for a keeper however he is quality and I’d be happy to see him in the Arsenal line-up. But Arsenal’s measly bid doesn’t look to be very promising and I won’t expect Arsenal to go back with a bid of more than £7 million, that’s if we go back in for him at all.

It’s not the first time Arsenal have bid very low on a player before with transfer rumours always being spread about Arsenal over the last few years. In some cases our bid has been too low that it’s been publicly laughed at and then a rival swoops in to snap them up! In terms of the technique, I see why Wenger does it. It means we can try and get the player for the cheapest price available. The other club will more than likely reject the first offer and then come back with their own valuation meaning we don’t just have to throw random high money bids out there, however in situations like these come towards the end of the window, it’s more than necessary that we stop playing around and get down to business.

What do you think Gooners, will this bizarre transfer technique actually lead to any signings this summer?
